Also, the teachers ARE worked to death in KIPP, but they know that going in and the KIPP my son has been in since Kindergarten, the teachers make it so much fun they don't even realize how long of a day it really is. As far as people saying that the teachers don't like parents stopping in, well in my son's school that is absolutely the farthest thing from the truth. As a matter of fact, they ENCOURAGE PARENTS to come in as much as possible and help out in the classrooms and be as involved in their child's class as they can. The first rule to success at KIPP is DEF "TEACHER-PARENT COMMUNICATION". Parents expect to send their kids to school and have them come home ready for college, but truth be told, that's only HALF the work. The OTHER half occurs AT HOME, when we're doing homework, then it's time for the parents to be involved in the child's schoolwork. Every teacher my son has had has given out their cell phone number at the beginning of the year so that WHENEVER we have ANY questions, concerns, or just don't understand something, we are free to call them, any time. When my son took his 3rd grade testing last year, he tested in the 90th percentile IN THE ENTIRE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA, and that, I strongly attribute to KIPP Gaston College Prep. So in ALL OF NC, HE IS IN THE VERY FEW TOP 10% OF STUDENTS. So, to anyone who says KIPP is a scam, obviously didn't bother to work hard ALONG WITH THE TEACHERS AND THEIR CHILD TO GET THEM TO THAT TOP 10% IN THE STATE. In my KIPP, EVERY SINGLE SENIOR THAT HAS GRADUATED SINCE IT HAS BEEN BUILT, HAS APPLIED AND BEEN ACCEPTED TO THE COLLEGE OF THEIR CHOICE. THAT'S 100% COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE RATE, FOR THOSE NON-KIPP STUDENTS OUT THERE. THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN BY CHANCE. THAT HAPPENS BY HARD WORK AND DEDICATION.
Tammy Kelly Proud KIPP Parenthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00842495756766215667noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2586988941850907367.post-29061993994195555052018-12-17T23:04:38.238-05:002018-12-17T23:04:38.238-05:00I go to the first KIPP school there and they have ...I go to the first KIPP school there and they have alot of teachers that hate on me because I am asian and sexist teacher like one named Mr.Vega who lets a lot of girls do stuff even if t=its bad and he is super strict on the boys. So basically, during the first time at lunch they need to be silent until they earn it and each homeroom has it's own table. Later on, they earn it and to let you know your son might not be getting the same education value as he can get at KIPP. Trust me, I hated that school when I first got in but now I love it. Is it alright to ask which school he is in? (For 5th grade I went to KIPP Infinity). The teachers will seem strict at first but they can help him improve greatly in academics! Towards the end of my middle school year, I was actually friends with some of my own teacher. As his parent, you have to be there to help him because in the end it will all be worth it! I completely assure you that! He told me and my husband how I will make new friends if you can't speak with other students from
other class. Also I've spoken with parents where KIPP has held back the students even though the student had perfect grades through out the whole school year. I believe in rules but not into the extreme where the students are afraid to speak up if something is wrong because the teachers would blame the students or for anything little mistake they do that'll get detention. Also he told him me they have to focus on the teacher and if they don't they lose points and even get detention. I will be taking him back to his elementary school. First off KIPP which stands for Knowledge Is Power Program have may schools. If you are going to bad mouth please know your facts. Secondly I am a parent of Kipp Infinity in Harlem my child have a IEP and he was in a bridge class. That is a class with kids who need small group and they transition into a larger class throughout the day.No one force any parents to put their kids in the school. I have some go...Hello everyone, I am a Kipp parent. I have some good and some bad with my experiences. The quality of the curriculum is excellent. I have witnessed a 99% graduate rate through Kipp. However, my concerns have been the respect, authority used, and the discipline. I have heard teachers talk out of tone but expect the childrrn to model the standard of the school. How? I have witnessed teachers talk to children harshly and then point at the child as if the child was 100% wrong and call it disrespectful. The model of the disciplinary action is something known as the bench. I have disagreed with this for so long. Thank God my son who graduated from a Kipp school had never given any problems but im having this exoerience now with my younger son who attends the middle school. Never have I seen something so downgrading. If the student gets a reminder twice then they were benched. Benched meaning Put on a Yellow shirt that known as the "Penny." The shirt to me is as if it represents a lock down in a juvenile detention center. The kids put it on and have silent lunch alone, no one cab talk to them, everyone knows they have been benched because of the shirt, and if anyone is caught talking to them they will experience the same. Horrible! They believe they will learn to make better choices but how many children make better choices after being put in jail. That is not the way. Children are not allowed to speak what is on their minds. If they try to explain themselves it's known as a disrespect and consequences follow. How w do you also teach them to stand up for themselves.? A lot of hypocrisy in these schools starting with the leaders. They automatically take the teachers side and the kids are left feeling as if it doesn't matter anyway because no one will believe me or listen. Their system outside of curriculum sucks! I am looking into other schools as we speak. I wonder why they have a camera system? I'm going to start asking them to push replay. Now there are some great teachers and for the most part the hours are ok. I do feel sorry for the teachers who live an hour away from work, have to stay long hours to then one right back but they chose that lifestyle and job. KIPP really do need to get it together before this information really hits the media and the world knows the truth about their disciplinary system, lack of professionalalism, poor model example, and the limited liability of truth. I can agree with one of the patents above that they don't want you there at all. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2586988941850907367.post-68886434598827053132015-11-04T10:06:05.613-05:002015-11-04T10:06:05.613-05:00How many colleges still bother with a school song ...How many colleges still bother with a school song unless it's tied to the football program? I can guarantee most students are unaware of school songs.

Studies of teacher effectiveness shows that 1st and 2nd year teachers are the least effective, and effectiveness increases rapidly until year 6 after which the rate of improvement (while still trending upwards) is more gradual. Yet a lot of charters have trouble keeping teachers much past year 3, often replacing them with fresh-out-of-college teachers. Enthusiasm, while nice, isn't a substitute for experience. Teaching is a profession, and most professionals get better over time. I'd rather have an experienced lawyer, accountant, computer programmer, medical professional or carpenter than an enthusiastic one. I would like to address some of the concerns brought up in the blog post and subsequent comments:
1. Sure the work is extremely tough for teachers, but ask yourselves if we did not work hard then who else would?

2. Cult like rituals? If you mean songs like "read baby read" then I again ask you to ask yourself how different that is from a school song in college?

3. Long hours? Somewhere along the way we put the needs of the teacher ahead of the student. If you do not see what is wrong with that then please just stop reading. Longer hours means more instruction and practice. Lebron James practices 10 hours a day. Gee, I wonder why he is arguably the best NBA player?

4. Regarding the "how long have the teachers taught at KIPP" argument, consider this: I have seen numerous tenured teachers in the public school system who simply hand out worksheets and kick back. Longevity does not equal quality.

No school is perfect, but KIPP does not settle. KIPP schools and leaders are constantly looking for ways to get students to and through college. Tons of research go into the methods used at KIPP schools and I would be more than happy to provide examples if asked. KIPP may not be liked by every student and parent that walks through the doors, but KIPP does provide every opportunity for the child to succeed. It is unfortunate that the government that so many people relied on failed them. Perhaps because very few, if any, policy makers were ever teachers themselves and even less attended public schools in the neighborhoods they "serve". Other charter schools may be great or may be horrible. That is the nature of a charter school. There is a certain level of independence when creating the curriculum and culture of a charter school. I do not think the negative experiences of a few speak to the overall experience of a KIPP student/teacher.

KIPP changed my life and the lives of my peers. Plain and simple. Tell me how many students at your local public school in the Bronx can say that.
