Those rooms now have few dividers, which means that all children in the rooms can be seen at all times. If seeing children as they learn is a violation of FERPA regulations, then every single school in this country has a problem with FERPA right now.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2586988941850907367.post-72734886860131333782011-01-23T17:56:44.182-05:002011-01-23T17:56:44.182-05:00Every single educator who has spent real time inve...Every single educator who has spent real time investigating the KED program has recognized that it is not "online" or "virtual" education. Merely because a student can access curriculum online does not make it "virtual" education, anymore than being able to read material in a textbook means that a student will ONLY use the textbook to educate herself. Instead, Innovate is about coaching and collaboration because we believe human interaction is required to develop a child’s intellect.

In addition, it would be impossible to "tear down" walls in Tweed, given its historical status. Just like schools have done in the space previously, anything Innovate does will have to be removable and subject to many restrictions.

Finally, Innovate Manhattan is not owned or operated by Kunskappskolan. It is a non-profit charter school that will receive it's pedagogical services from Kunskapsskolan USA, and that will manage its own finances and back office services (or contract with another group to do that). Just as New York City taxpayers would cry foul if per pupil funding was sent back to Sweden to build schools there, the Swedish taxpayers would be unhappy if their per pupil funding built a school in NYC. The revenue generated by Kunskapsskolan AB in Sweden funds existing and new schools there.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2586988941850907367.post-25078783961863204002011-01-17T11:15:19.147-05:002011-01-17T11:15:19.147-05:00The same thing is happening in Hells Kitchen. So the kids there will have to suffer through 3+ years of construction. Some of the parents would like the kids to be moved while construction is taking place but others fear that in retaliation for asking our kids to be moved - the DOE would move them to Staten Island and never move them back. In the meantime, Midtown West, which is right in the heart of Hells Kitchen continues to serve students from all over District 2 and beyond - like New Jersey. As a homeowner in Hells Kitchen I'm appalled that my kid can't go to Midtown West because he couldn't get in - it's by application only and has turned into a small, elite little country club. P.S. 51 gets the brunt of low income, special ed and ESL kids. So if you move to Hells Kitchen beware -- you have to hope Principal Dean Ketchum likes your application and what you can bring to his little fiefdom or your stuck in a construction war zone at P.S. 51.jodamanoreply@blogger.com
