Class Size Limits for NYC Public Schools

We are getting a number of inquiries from parents seeking to know the limits on the number of children per class. From the Frequently Asked Questions page at Class Size Matters:

What are the current class size limits? Are they set by the teacher contract?

Yes. The UFT class-size limits are as follows:

• In kindergarten, 25.
• In grades 1-3, 29.
• In grades 4-6, 32.
• In Title I middle schools, 30.
• In non-Title I middle schools, 33.
• In high schools, 34 for academic classes.

    Where it says 34 in an academic class for HS -- Not totally true.

    For music, it's 50 : "g. The size of required music classes in the high schools shall be determined on the basis of a maximum of 50 pupils for each teacher"

    And we may as well mention gym classes, which are not academic, but have SAFETY issues no one seems to care much about :
    " f. The size of physical education classes in the junior and senior high schools shall be determined on the basis of a maximum of 50 pupils for each teacher"

    Both parties in the Contract -- the DOE and UFT -- have let it happen since time immemorial. It is not an oversight. This is planned chaos.

    All of these class sizes are much too big! 25 kids in kindergarten? 32 kids in 4th grade? I'm sure the UFT has fought hard to keep these numbers from being higher, but class sizes like these do not support effective teaching or effective education.

    Hello the public schools are very helpful for the family that cant afford a privates one , the public schools are great a lot of nice kids in new York .
